ZOOs, CHILDREN, SPIDERS, FROGS, BIRDS, PETS, etc

On this beautiful sunny Melbourne day I decided to pick a basketful of crab apples for another brew of crab apple jelly. Easier said than done when you have a nosey cat who can climb trees as well as any monkey!

Zak checking the basket for volume before we begin picking the red crab apples

Does my bum look big in this? I used to sit right inside this basket.

That's no monkey-it's just Zak flicking crab apples all over the garden!

Avoiding claws & apples flying in all directions, I did manage to pick a basketful of the little beauties.

Try making crab apple jelly – it’s so easy & a jar of jelly makes a lovely addition to a gift basket

Well, I’m not sure if three month old Zak thinks he’s entitled to bath with the birds and bees, but I know  the birds aren’t too happy about it, going by the squawking.

Zak thinks he’s so clever climbing up there. Just as well he only goes out in the garden with us, because he is a house cat.

The bird life is safe. We think.

Uh oh! Sizing up the leap!

Bugger! The birds are up there now!

Jennifer Hunt is a hero and so is her brave dog, Jed.

In 2010 Jennifer Hunt spent $30,000 on vet bills. Her beloved Jed suffered ruptured discs which rendered him unable to use his back legs. He needed three bouts of surgery before he could walk and run again.

Jennifer said “The thought of giving up on Jed because I couldn’t afford [the surgery] would’ve been one of the cruelest blows to endure – yet everyday people are faced with [having to put their pets down].”  Jennifer, instead, used money she had saved for a new kitchen. Anyone who has had a pet animal in their lives will know how much they are loved as a part of the family, and the heartache when they are killed or have to be put to ‘sleep’ permanently.

Jennifer set up the Pet Medical Crisis Fund which is available to pets whose only other alternative is to face euthanasia . The Fund only operates Victoria wide and works with vets who agree to reduce their fees to a minimum to make life-saving surgery affordable. In the past twelve months the Fund has assisted in eleven cases.

The Fund relies on donations and grants to accumulate funds. In August the Fund won the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation Award of $5000. To keep the momentum going, the Fund is currently seeking a sponsor.
