A Rare Jewel
A Rare Jewel
(Poem Dedicated to Greg, Marina, Paula & Barry Milicich)

A Rare Jewel
<>
You were a dark beauty
A mother goddess, no less
Tho’ you wore no wings
Nor diaphanous dress
<>
Jewel, you were so named
So fitting and so pure
Your love shone for others
Your hands they did nurture
<>
Into my life you appeared
When a babe-in-arms I held
A lost child myself
Out-running the citadel
<>
Between the Maitland and the Aro
Often we travelled, the two of us
Escaping the inescapable
Without much ado, little or no fuss
<>
From a Mansor to a Milicich
Across a tumultuous strait
You too had to cross many a stitch
To outwit the whims of fate
<>
Life continually stirs under snow
Nothing can forever suffocate
The new life replacing old
When warmth creeps in to supplicate
<>
Jewel, no longer do I meet you there
Upon the sweeping stair
But forever in my heart and mind
I’ll always hold you dear
